Day of Valor

Bataan has fallen. On April 9, 1942, officials in command of Bataan – where Filipino and American forces maintained the main resistance in the war against the Japanese – formally surrendered. The Philippine-American troops on this war-ravaged and bloodstained peninsula have laid down their arms. With heads bloody but unbowed, they have yielded to the superior force and numbers of the enemy, the Japanese forces.

The Day of Valor, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, is annually celebrated by the Filipinos nationwide on the 9th of April. The Philippines was involved in World War II from

December 8, 1941, to September 2, 1945. In these roughly four years of fierce war, Bataan was the nation’s center of defense. The 9th of April, 1942, was the day Bataan fell. Every year we commemorate the bravery and heroism of the Filipinos who fought for our freedom and national pride.

Up to the present time, Filipinos commemorate the Araw ng Kagitingan as a National Memorial Day for the brave soldiers who fought against the Japanese army during World War II. Filipinos will always remember the epic struggle of the Filipino soldiers during that war, sieged on land and guarded by sea; Filipino and American soldiers have endured more than three months of battle. As the celebration connotes, we look back on how gallantly our Filipino soldiers
fought for our native land. Their love for our country is immeasurable and priceless; they have dedicated their life fighting and giving up their own lives until the end. It signifies an unconquerable faith, the thought of freedom of the country, and the dignity and pride of Filipinos against the enemies.

Araw ng Kagitingan does not only signify the bravery of our Filipino soldiers during the war. It also rekindles the spirit of patriotism in every Filipino, to be able to sacrifice and give back something for the country even in our small little ways. It could be an act of kindness for our fellowmen or our country as well. Being a magiting nowadays could also mean being socially aware of what is happening around and how one can contribute to others and for the nation too.

Bataan has fallen, but the spirit that made it stand – a beacon to all the liberty-loving peoples of the world – cannot fall! Araw ng Kagitingan will always be remembered; the heroism of our brave soldiers will never be forgotten and will always be in every Filipinos’ heart and soul.
